Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was a war in Russia. Adolph Hitler invaded the USSR (Russia) on June 22nd, 1941. This was the largest military operation of World War II. Some 4.5 million troops launched a surprise attack deployed from Poland, Finland, and Romania. All of which were controlled by Germany at the time.
Despite Germany having signed a non-aggression pack with the USSR in 1939, both sides were always on their toes with each other, each unsure if they could trust the other. The agreement basically gave them more time to prepare for a war that was inevitable. The Soviets were very unprepared for the sudden blitzkrieg attacks across their border that spanned nearly 1,800 miles long. They suffered horrible losses.
By December of 1941, German troops were within sight of Moscow, Russia, and they seiged the city.
